Synthetic Sports

The production of a computer based cartoon, formed the practical part of my thesis. I had to deal with the conception, scribbles and designs of character and environment, drawn and animated storyboards, layouts and structure of layers, final drawing, animation, audio and video editing. For the first time I worked with a Wacom graph tablet, a pin-based input solution.

I tried to develop the combination of fundamental methods of the classical cartoon production and digital processing. I found different methods, which have been helpful for the production of characters and environment.

The content of the movie is based on previous doping scandals and illustrated in a humorous way.

synopsis:
In a secret laboratory in a dystopic future a sportsman is going to be doped beyond recognition. At the same time a health-conscious sportsman is training for an upcoming sprint event. The extent of the chance inequality becomes clear, when both main figures confront each other in the stadium.

The classical cartoon is in a strong decrease from the world of cinema. Replaced by the introduction of the 3D technology, it mainly find it's place in TV-series. While Chinese production studios still focus on traditional paintings and manual trick techniques, a conversion of the manufacture techniques takes place in the remaining surrounding field. Complex software developments for animation and compositing displace the foil technology. Pin-based input solutions replace classical drawing on the light table. The computer-assisted animation makes production easier but also causes a production-determined aesthetic change.
